The workforce strikes back: Europe's unions battle cost-of-living crisis

Image
Depending on who you ask, Europe is either living through a “hot strike summer” of workers standing up for their rights or a “summer of discontent” wrecking the holiday plans of millions.  There is no doubt that strikes are back in fashion. The walkouts on Britain’s railways are the worst for decades, telecoms workers downed tools for the first time since the 1980s, airline disputes across Europe are affecting the industry’s comeback from the pandemic, and doctors and teachers could be next out of the door. Worse still, there is more to come. Further strike action is planned across the national rail networks, continuing a summer of disruption, with National Rail and workers’ unions locked in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions. Staff will walkout this weekend on Saturday and also on Thursday and next Saturday. Alongside heatwaves reminiscent of Britain's great 'summer of 1976', the plethora of strikes also has a ring of the 1970s when workers downed tools and bro

McDonald's set to reopen in Ukraine and bring 'important sense' of normality

Image
McDonald's has announced that it plans to reopen restaurants in Ukraine, having closed them in March amid the conflict with Russia. The US fast-food company said that after extensive consultation with Ukrainian officials, suppliers and security specialists, and in consideration of employees’ request to return to work, it had decided to institute a phased plan to reopen some restaurants in Kyiv and western Ukraine, where other businesses have safely reopened. The company has continued to pay the salaries of more than 10,000 employees, and said that the reopening would "support a small but important sense" of normality. "And Ukrainian officials have advised that businesses resuming operations will support the local economy and the Ukrainian people," it said. McDonald's had 109 restaurants in Ukraine, but has not confirmed how many will reopen. It pulled out of Russia in May, after closing all 850 outlets in protest against the war in Ukraine. READ MORE  : ht

Super moon lights up skies around the world

Image
The final super moon of the year shone bright in skies around the world on Thursday night. The orange-tinged Sturgeon Moon dazzled in Dubai, illuminated Istanbul and lit up London and Lisbon. There is more to come on Friday, with the enlarged moon visible once more. The Perseid meteor shower is taking place at the same time, but is expected to be partly impeded by the full moon phase. If skies were clear, stargazers would have witnessed 80 to 100 meteors an hour shooting across the skies. The shower is caused by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. It leaves a long trail of dust and debris during its 133-year orbit around the Sun. R E A D M O R E : https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/2022/08/12/super-moon-lights-up-skies-around-the-world/

Eve Muirhead: Olympic champion announces retirement from curling

Image
Olympic curling champion Eve Muirhead has announced her retirement. Muirhead skippered Team GB to gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, adding to bronze from Sochi 2014, as well as claiming both world and European titles. "After 15 years of international curling and 21 international titles I have made the hardest decision of my life to hang up my curling shoes and retire," Muirhead said in a post on social media. "Throughout my career and like most athletes, I have experienced both the highest of the highs, (becoming an Olympic champion) and the lowest of lows and at times the future seemed very distant. It's been an emotional journey, but a journey that I am incredibly proud of. "Behind every athlete is a team and I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best and therefore there are many thanks to be made. I can't thank everyone here, but will do so individually, I hope, over the coming weeks."

UK recession looms after economy shrank 0.1% in three months to June

Image
The UK economy contracted by 0.1 per cent between April and June, driven by a decline in spending by households and on fighting coronavirus, compared to growth of 0.8 per cent in the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics has said. It was the first fall back since the pandemic, in part reflecting time off for Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee celebrations, stoking fears that a recession might be around the corner. The figure for June showed a 0.6 per cent decline because of the extra holiday at the start of the month, which followed surprise growth in May due to the celebrations. The state of the economy, and how to tackle the cost-of-living crisis in particular, has been the main focus of the race to become the next UK prime minister. With energy bills rising steeply, on top of increasing food and fuel prices, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have both been setting out plans for tax cuts or extra help for consumers. Samsung's Lee Jae-yong may rejoin board after receiving pardon

Image
Samsung Electronics' Lee Jae-yong, professionally known as Jay Y Lee in the West, had his right to work at the company restored by South Korea, opening the way for him to formally take the helm of the country’s largest conglomerate that is battling global demand and supply shocks. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol cleared the heir to the country’s biggest company of bribery charges, for which Mr Lee spent 18 months in prison before his release on parole a year ago. Samsung’s shares rose 1.3 per cent in Seoul on the news. The move comes as the global economy faces successive shocks from rising inflation, market disruption from the war in Ukraine and logistics challenges triggered by China’s “zero Covid” lockdowns, raising the threat of uncertainty for export-orientated South Korea. Rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over chip technology also complicates long-term operation plans for Samsung, which runs big microchip manufacturing plants in the two largest econom

Ousted Sri Lankan president arrives in Thailand after Singapore stay

Image
Former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who last month fled anti-government protests in his country, arrived in Thailand on Thursday night on a flight from Singapore, where he had been staying since mid-July. Thai television stations showed Mr Rajapaksa and a woman believed to be his wife outside the VIP hall at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport as they were led to a limousine, which then drove off to an undisclosed destination. Officials in Thailand on Wednesday said they had been asked by the Sri Lankan government to allow him entry, and that he would be permitted to stay temporarily. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said he was aware of Mr Rajapaksa’s intended visit and that it was allowed for humanitarian reasons because the former president was seeking asylum in a third country. He did not elaborate but said Mr Rajapaksa would not engage in political activity while in Thailand. Read More : https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/asia/2022/08/12/ousted-sri-lankan-president-a
