Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to begin crucial India visit on September 5

Image
Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit India next week "to strengthen the multifaceted relationship" between the two countries, her government has said. Ms Hasina's three-day visit, starting from September 5, comes as she battles growing anti-India sentiment at home. New Delhi and Dhaka share strong historical and cultural ties and diplomatic relations have strengthened under Ms Hasina's 13-year rule. The Bangladeshi leader will hold talks with her Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, and Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar. She will also meet Indian President Droupadi Murmu, who took office in July, the Bangladeshi Ministry of External Affairs said. "In the recent years, both sides have sustained engagement, including at the highest level," the ministry said. "The visit will further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the two countries." Ms Hasina is also likely to visit the holy city of Ajmer in western Rajasthan ...

India's Narendra Modi launches first locally built warship

Image
India has launched its first locally built warship, which was made at a cost of $2.5 billion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier on Friday, describing it as an “exceptional symbol of self-reliant India”. Named the INS Vikrant , the vessel is 262 metres long and 62m wide ― about the size of two football fields. It took 13 years to build. Vikrant means courageous in Hindi. “Today, India has entered the list of countries that can build such large warships indigenously. Vikrant has infused new confidence,” Mr Modi said at the commissioning ceremony at the Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi in southern Kerala. “ Vikrant is large and grand, Vikrant is distinct, Vikrant is special. Vikrant is not just a warship, it is the evidence of the hard work, talent, impact and commitment of India of the 21st century,” he said. Ousted Sri Lankan president arrives in Thailand after Singapore stay

Image
Former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who last month fled anti-government protests in his country, arrived in Thailand on Thursday night on a flight from Singapore, where he had been staying since mid-July. Thai television stations showed Mr Rajapaksa and a woman believed to be his wife outside the VIP hall at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport as they were led to a limousine, which then drove off to an undisclosed destination. Officials in Thailand on Wednesday said they had been asked by the Sri Lankan government to allow him entry, and that he would be permitted to stay temporarily. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said he was aware of Mr Rajapaksa’s intended visit and that it was allowed for humanitarian reasons because the former president was seeking asylum in a third country. He did not elaborate but said Mr Rajapaksa would not engage in political activity while in Thailand. Pakistan minister urges public to drink less tea to reduce import bill

Image
Pakistan's Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has urged the public to cut down on their tea consumption to reduce the country's import bill. "I appeal to the nation to reduce tea intake by one or two cups daily because we borrow money for tea import as well," Iqbal said while addressing the media on Tuesday. He also asked the larger public to support government efforts to lift the country out of the economic stall it is in. Iqbal also appealed to the business community shut markets by 8.30pm to reduce electricity costs. To prevent a looming default, the Pakistani government banned the import of 41 items in May. The decision lowered imports of cars, mobile phones, cosmetics, cigarettes, food products, certain garments and toiletries. However, the measure seems to not be enough, as it would only curtail the import bill by less than 5%, or less than $600 million. Yen falls to 24-year high as policy gap slide continues

Image
The yen fell to a 24-year low Monday as Japan’s easy monetary policy increasingly stood at odds with developed peers raising rates. The currency fell more than 0.5 per cent to ¥135.19 to the dollar, the lowest since October 1998, as Treasury yields extended Friday’s inflation-shock driven gains. The yen has tumbled about 15 per cent this year — the worst-performing major currency — as the Bank of Japan keeps rates anchored to boost a sluggish economy while US yields surge on bets for continued Federal Reserve rate increases. Friday’s shock US inflation print, which was higher than expected, has heaped pressure on the Fed to intensify monetary tightening, boosting the dollar. Before it hit, senior Japanese officials delivered a ramped-up warning on the yen’s decline, putting their concern in a written statement for the first time as they seek to keep a floor under the currency.
