US authorities revealed that Gupta, 52, and an Indian government staffer exchanged communications, planning the murder in exchange for assistance in dropping a criminal case. Gupta allegedly attempted to hire a hitman to kill Pannun, leading to a 20-year jail term if convicted. The US has also accused an undisclosed Indian government employee in this matter. India's Foreign Ministry expressed a serious approach to such allegations, establishing a high-level inquiry committee to investigate.

The White House urged New Delhi to hold those involved accountable, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken anticipates the results of India's inquiry. Gupta, currently in a Czech prison awaiting extradition to the US, moved the Supreme Court in India, claiming religious and human rights violations. The court deferred immediate relief and instructed Gupta to file a copy with the government.

This case has reignited scrutiny of Canada's allegations that an Indian government official was involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Despite Canada's assertions, India dismissed the claims as motivated and absurd, highlighting the lack of concrete evidence shared by Ottawa.
